Not THE Gravemind that you fight in Halo 2 and 3, there can be more than one Gravemind. The flood chose Captain Keyes to become a Gravemind because he had the most knowledge to harness. Master Chief stopped the full transformation by killing it.

The Captain Keyes entry is a recreation of a chapter of the book Halo: The Flood, watching this made the death of Keyes so much sadder for me. After eading the books he became my favorite Halo character.
