(From 2008 XLR8RTV) Guitarist and electronic musician Christopher Willits gives the first of many lessons on home recording. In this episode, Willits starts with the basics: how to get sounds from your guitar into your computer using pedals, pickups, and Ableton Live. Tune in once a month as Willits tackles the different aspects of home recording--from which gear gives you which sounds to his take on the best available software programs.

  • I dunno. Electronic music has no feeling. No amount of customization and making own "plugins" in Max MSP will compensate for the lack of feeling. Then you have the chance to rip a nice shuffled riff with the guitar to give it some feel, but no, you just tap the strings like a drunk metronome. lol. Do you kids know rhythm anymore? It's like everyone is obsessed with boring 4/4 instant drum machined beats :/

  • @noizereduction That's your opinion. For me, tons of music created w/ electronic tools has feeling + emotion. I put a lot of love into my music- shop.christopherwillits-com I merge "acoustic" + "electronic" Many people hear beyond these constructs. It's just music. Regardless of your tool w/ practice the sound you create can hold the intention you wish to express. + These are tutorials. I keep it simple, I encourage creative growth. Ask a question, someone can maybe help you here

  • simplest setup :

    guitar - line6ux1 - ableton live .

  • @2009korte yeah that's nice.

  • @christopherwillits

your setup is crazy, i couldn't put that much work into it. i like daws and plugins and vsti's, but nothing beats real jamming

  • @2009korte what is crazy to some is normal to others. the systems of software + hardware i design allow me to extend my guitar and voice to create the sounds i hear in my imagination, on the spot, in the moment. that is "real jamming". i collaborate/jam with others and have tons of flexibility. i can also just play through with dry guitar sound when i want. this setup is from 08, dated video here. the tools shave shrunk since + i've improved it all, will share some new ideas soon

  • @noizereduction Saying electronic music has no feeling is idiotic. Apparently you have never listened to aphex twin, amon tobin, or any IDM. Electronic music is a platform with infinite possibilities, has nothing to do with "4/4" dance music or "instant drum machined beats". Try sound designing..instead of saying something you don't understand or can't grasp a hold of has "no feeling".

  • @christopherwillits

cool , looking forward to it

  • @lordfin glad i can help. these are getting dated at this point- xlr8r had to pull xlr8rtv production, but there is still a lot of fundamental stuff to gather from them. more on the way. been planning some new episodes and have a few shot. new thing, excited to share.

  • Really helpful. Thanks!
