The D90 has some problems with fluorescent lights. You can avoid it:

- pan slowly across the scene
- then there are more or less lines/waves
- at one moment they disappear totally
- immediately press AE-Lock

To find the right exposure it can be used in combination with the Exposure Values

  • my D90 also got this problem... izzit every D90 will got this problem...

o actually got settin can fix the flickering Avoiding waves..

  • @Dollbabyzz

No, every d90 got this problem. The only fix i could imagine would be an update to full manual control. Then one could set the shutter speed to 1/50 (pal) or 1/60 (ntsc) and the flickering will definitely vanish...

  • Hi! I have the same problem with the D5000, but cant seem to lock the ae before hitting record. Is there any way to lock without holding down the button while recording? Like an autolock?

  • @tomsommerseth

I´m not familiar with the D5000 but I guess its the same procedure. It seems that you need to dial in the appropriate settings in the menu...

  • This appeared on my suggested videos completely by accident, amazing cos i encountered this just this week when shooting a video.

Im a tad confused though, you said pan slowly across the scene - then there are more or less lines/waves - at one moment they disappear totally... in your clip you havent panned and they have just gone when you put exp lock on. Is it simply putting exp lock on that fixes it?

I ask cos dont have a fluro handy to test it myself. (Ive attached my video)

  • @andymuzic

No, this panning-thing has to be done prior to shooting. That´s the reason why you don´t see it in the shots above.

  • the best thing to do is to lock the AE-L botton on the spot that you don't have a fluorecent waves and when it is locked you can forget about those waves on the D90 it is goes under the setting : Menu/custom setting menu/controls/assign AE-L/AF-L botton/AE lock (hold) when you do that after you press that botton it will stay that way until the next time you press it i believe it is the same on the D7000 and the D5000/5100

  • I have the same problem with my Canon 550D.

  • i have this problem on my New Camera... Nikon D7000.. thanks for your tip...

  • @tomsommerseth Yes there is. I am also a D5000 owner. You have to change the button behavior from the settings and then you can simply click it one time and the lock will hold for a certain amount of time. I think I have set it to 10 mins which is more than the maximum allowed HD recording time ;) Good luck

  • This isn't a problem with the D90. It's a problem with the user expecting too much when in automatic mode.

That's why there's a manual override which if used properly can overcome all these types of issues.

You should change the title of this video because it wrongly suggests that this issue is the fault of the camera, when in fact it's the fault of the user.
