My Morning Jacket's latest album was a two-part surprise for me. First, I was happy to hear how alive and ambitious the first half of this album was. Not only are the hooks and instrumentation strong, but the band seems equally comfortable saying something beautiful or funny with their lyrics.
But the second shocker was when the latter half of this record pulled the rug out from under me with some pretty underwhelming songwriting and vocal deliveries. While it's nice to have some familiar reference points on this album--which show up in some tried and true chord progressions and melodies--My Morning Jacket doesn't exactly refurbish these ideas in a very exciting way.
I am literally split on this album. Some points really seduce me, but others make me feel like the steam just ran out halfway through. Dang!

I think you take Holdin' on to Black Metal way too seriously. That's all. MMJ made a great album.

As always, you're entitled to your own opinion, but I have one question: how can you not like Jim James' vocals if you like fleet foxes so much? In my opinion, they sound VERY similar

This is an honest review. I felt the very same way after listening to it the first time, it doesn't have the staying power or haunting feeling that Z and At dawn even Highly Suspicious had. That being said I still love these guys more for their live performances. All the songs on Circuital are much better live, as are all MMJ songs. Cheers! Keep the reviews coming. @ODBs40oz Does it matter? The fact is I don't like the way it sounds. Everyone has influences, it just has to do one who those influences are. Or maybe it doesn't, maybe I just don't like My Morning Jacket because of the way THEY sound. Point it, I think My Morning Jacket is awful. And why is it hilarious that I mentioned My Morning Jacket and Muse in the same sentence? I didn't compare them, I simply said they're both overrated.
And yes, I love Fleet Foxes thank you very much. :)

Ill bet you like Fleet Foxes. Tell me they don't borrow from the past, better yet tell me they dont borrow from mmj's first two albums

horrible review, the album should get a 8, you are too critical sometimes and try and break down every single track.

@theone456 well, what is an album if not a group of tracks. i'll agree that some LPs have a strong, overarching theme that links the songs together, but i didn't find anything about these tracks--outside of style / recording--that made me link them together. i mean, as an experience, this album still doesn't do it for me. it's a great recording, but the latter half loses me. just imagine a movie that just starts to lose you around the middle. it's roughly the same experience for me.
