Here are the basic steps to making a friendship bracelet, as told by me.

@girf123100 Hahaha. You are quite correct, but when I made this years ago, I couldn't find mine, so I figured this set-up would have to work. Ironically, at this very second I happen to know exactly where that clipboard is..

@lizzy1135 About 4 feet long, because I doubled it over. But 4 feet wound up being a little excessive.
I would suggest about a foot and a half per color, unless you are making a loop in the middle and doubling up, like I did here. Then about 3 feet. A little less would probably also be perfectly fine. It also depends on how loose or tight you are making your knots, too. And if you are tying super tightly, then expect your bracelet to start trying to curl up on you..
