On November 10, 2007, Detention Deputy Nelson Birch was escorting an inmate to a shower at the Falkenburg Road Jail. The inmate, without provocation, pulled a shank a homemade knife and slashed the deputy on the neck. The laceration barely missed the deputys carotid artery. The deputy was treated for the wound at a hospital. The inmate was charged with attempted murder. The shank was fashioned from a toothbrush and a razor blade the inmate had concealed in his cell.
