This silver, sleek hand-held unit will capture audio at 24 BIT/96Khz resolution via the two on-board high quality condenser microphones or alternatively there's also the facility to connect an external stereo miniature phone type powered microphone. There's high or low gain settings for the internal microphone although it's worth noting that the internal and external microphones cannot be used simultaneously.

The R-05 has a clear 128 x 64 dot graphic LCD display depicting, recording time, gain status, sample rate and other useful information, the recording time is up to 16 hours continuous recording and over 30 hours continuous playback from a single full charge. The R-05 has the ability to record several types of data that include :-

WAVE (Sampling Rate: 44.1/48/88.2/96 kHz, Bit Depth: 16/24 bits)
MP3 (Sampling Rate: 44.1/48 kHz, Bit Rates: 64/96/128/160/192/224/320 kbps)
WAVE + MP3 (Sampling Rate: 44.1/48 kHz, Bit Depth: 16 bits, Bit Rates: 128 kbps)

It will also accomodate MP3 and M-PEG 1 Audio Layer 3 all of which record onto a single stereo track on an SD Card with SDHC compatability whilst a full compatability spec list can be found on the Roland UK Website ...

Although you can connect the R-05 to a PC or Mac via the on-board USB port it's also possible to edit some of the settings without having to do so and audio can be trimmed, cut and spliced directly from the screen and if desired there's also built-in reverb to give your finished audio a sweetener ...

In rehearsal mode this clever device will automatically split pieces of audio up into segments such as individual tracks or songs, whilst you can also repeatedly loop a specified region of audio, or change the playback speed without changing the pitch. Another feature is the ability to play back a difficult phrase slowly or play back at high speed to grasp the overall structure of a song in a short time.

Whilst these are characteristics aimed at aiding musicians the R-05 is also a handy business tool for non-musical environments such as seminars, lectures, presentations and meetings and runs on either the A/C adapter or 2 x AA batteries. It is further enhanced by the accompanying accessories that include a windscreen and tri-pod mount to make this a very handy, practical and impressive piece of kit.
