holy cow, is he using an HB pencil? That's control. Note the line work is similar to line work in etched plates.

Actually, all those tones are created with small lines of ink. All of those illustrations are just black ink. He used some kind of quill. He talks about it in an interview.

he uses a Gillott 291 nib, or did on Frankenstein anyway.
