Join Sunny Savage on the White Earth Reservation in Northern Minnesota for the third annual Wild Food Summit. In this video, part 2 of 3 about the Wild Food Summit III, Sunny interviews Matt Mattson and Sam Thayer.

Matt Mattson, from Northern Minnesota, is a biologist and archeologist who incorporates the ages and ways of archeological finds to better understand the ways in which people lived. He is interested in utilizing historical agricultural knowledge to improve future utilization and improve sustainability. He believes that people need to give a higher priority to spending time in nature.

Sam Thayer lives in Ogema, Wisconsin and has been teaching about edible wild plants for over 10 years and recently published The Foragers Harvest: A Guide to Identifying, Harvesting and Preparing Edible Wild Plants. He was editor for The Forager, a wild food periodical. Check out his website: http://www.foragersharvest.com.

  • Agreed! :)

  • I really like what Sam has to say here about time, and our relationship with plants. He is absolutely right, the experience of going out into the fields and forests and gathering something like blackberries is totally invaluable.

And I don't know about the rest of society, but staining my fingers in blackberry juice is a top priority every summer : D

  • Wow, some nice philosophies in this episode. I think some excellent arguments are made, here!

  • im jealous

  • Are those wild turkeys gobbling at the end? Haha

  • Sunny I was blessed that our paths crossed when we had breakfast here together in Santa Maria. I am hoping to see you again at the Chumash Pow Wow. I would like to talk to you about a couple of things. E-mail me if you get a chance.
