Most beautiful opening scene in a period movie, if not any movie.

You watch this and understand why there was a French Revolution, all that idle time was supported by huge estates with peasants not only as virtual serfs but also required to pay the taxes on the estates. The Nobility paid no taxes, rarely visited their chateaux, and for the most part simply did not care. Unlike Britain where it was the landlord's responsibility to pay taxes out of his income, so gentry had a vested interest in making their property as profitable as possible

For reenactors, history heads, this is THE clothes movie to see! It's the gold standard in presenting 18th c. high fashion. None better!

One of the best movies ever, John Malkovich and Glenn Close are brilliant, they both should have won an Oscar...Stephen Frears is a great director...the book on which this movie was based on is also a masterpiece! I recomend it!

i think its disgusting that Glenn did not win for this. One of the most intelligent and riveting cinematic performances of the 20th century.
