The prairie habitat is remarkable for its variety of plants and diversity of animals.
Years ago, prairies were home to prairie chickens, jack rabbits, badgers, bullsnakes, and bison.
As the prairie was converted to crop lands and towns, these animals disappeared from most of our landscape.
Prairies are no longer common in Missouri and the Midwest but examples of this habitat can still be found on public lands where they are protected and on private lands where they are used for native pasture and hay.
