How to build a neck through guitar (Part 1). My first attempt building an electric guitar. It's made of Maple and Walnut with Ebony fretboard. I put all the bells and whistles on it to learn the hard way. It turned out really well. Hope this walks you through the process and encourages you to build one.

  • How do you you figure out the width of the middle part? And how do you measure the wings?

  • @MrAJSavage I had the measurement of the string nut width and the width it needed to be at the 24th fret and cut a straight line down the entire length of the neck. you also need to know the neck length in between those 2 points. The wings were kind of an educated guess. I didn't want the string angle from the nut to the tuners be too sharp so i didn't make the wings too wide.

  • Cheers, does it work well on guitars? Is it powerful enough?

  • No not really. It's underpowered and the cut strays away from the line. Apparently bigger is better when it comes to bandsaws.

  • hey what is the make and model of that bandsaw, i have beenlooking for one that small for a while but 'mini bandsaw' does not have many results? cheers

  • It's a Delta. Not sure what model it is sorry. Thanks

  • @hillbillygenius72 you put a straight edge on top of the piece of wood and hold it up to a bright light, if you can see light between the wood and the straight edge that means the wood is not perfectly flat.

  • @catguyone The only thing I can think of is after you plane the neck down and square, turn it on its side and use the router with the flush cut bit. Just lay the straightedge at the angle you need and cut away. Then you can put the fretboard on the angled section and put whatever spacer wood you need under the fretboard to get the height you need.

  • Very cool video, got me to thinking about making a neck through for a 65 double cut-away Gibson style Melody maker. I just don't like the idea of making it with a seperate neck which joins at the 19th fret, not to mention having to get a proper angle to the neck pocket.

Any thoughts on making the neck have an angle as I will be using a tune-o-matic style bridge.

  • what is meant by check for daylight?
