@larrydonguy just said you cant compare both singers to each other.not their careers neither their voices nor the two versions of Granada..Fritz was the best Tenor we ever had in Germany. Mario..well...he is maybe most beautiful male voice ever recorded until now...this statement does not mean any debase of all the other great tenors like Björling,Gigli,Tucker,de Monaco,Wunderlich,diStefano,Co
relli...those where the golden times of classical singing...todays tenors dont have a clue of bel canto -
@chris99103 I'm not going to fight you Chris. I might point out the irony here, given that opera fandom can get nationalistic, that we have a German raving about an American tenor and an American raving about a German tenor. Best Regards. Larrydonguy

@larrydonguy well,I dont see any automatic classification..if youve been to opera or recitals live you know theres a huuuuuge difference between light-lyric and lyric-spinto voices.Wunderlich is probably the best lyric tenor of the 20th century but Mario had the golden tone, the natural talent to instantly transmit emotion to the audience, perfect diction even in highest notes and the power of a spinto. I really like Fritz Granada but its a different song and there is no point of comparing them.

@chris99103 It would probably be better to discuss this at the Wunderlich Granada YT clip. Does Wunderlich's voice strike you there as "light lyric"? I don't buy into this automatic classification of singers as "light-lyric", "lyric", "spinto", etc as if they were breeds of dogs. A singer is whatever he/she displays himself/herself to be on a given song. Does the Wunderlich Granada really strike you as being light-voiced?
-
@larrydonguy Fritz was light lyric voice,Mario lyric-spinto.You cant compare their power and the german Granada has nothing to do with the original, even the arrangement is totally different not to talk about the lyrics. Two different songs really...and why you say german-born Wunderlich,he was german...and so am I.
Friz was a wonderful tenor but his voice was nowhere near big enough to compete with Marios power. Just a shame Fritz did not sung/recorded in original language ital or french (Carmen)

@chris99103 Check out the performance of Granada by German-born Fritz Wunderlich.

@lisa91316 the lyrics to Granada are in Spanish
NO ONE...I repeat...NO ONE of all the other tenors out there can beat or has beaten Marios Performance of Granada in passion and power...his voice was one of a kind and history will rank him within the best Tenors ever. Not for his operatic career but for the quality of his voice.
