For those that said the video was a bit too dark. http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n225/pks_loss/DSC01602.jpg

I love Sun Microsystems!!! This is just a brief video, showing off my rack of servers. I host them out of my home. I'm a really big Sun Microsystems enthusiast, and bought my first Sun hardware almost a year ago.

The four computers you see there are named (from top to bottom): WORK, PLAY, SERVER, and Untangle. WORK is meant for well... work, it has similar processor as PLAY, but is a different model of server. THE Sun Servers use the UltraSPARC II processors, WORK Uses UltraSparc IIe at 500 MhZ, PLAY uses the UltraSparc IIi at 440 MhZ. (Oh and boy do they hum ^_^), WORK has 768 MB ram, PLAY has 256, each one has (2) 10,000 RPM SCSI hard drives, WORK has the larger drives (18G), PLAY has (9.1G). PLAY uses Ubuntu Linux.

SERVER has it's own set of rules, and is mostly used as a Home Server. (Pentium II, 256 RAM, (2) Hard Drives: (1) 20 GIG, (1) 200 GIG.

Untangle, is well, just that. It untangles all the traffic and acts as a virus-scanning, spyware de-spying, port-blocking behemoth that I love oh so well. (Best of all, it's FREE!!!)

All this is being tied together by a D-Link DGL-4500. The thing is a beast, so I put a fan on it to keep it nice and cool. (I don't mind the noise)

  • Pretty cool setup :). I don't physically have a server but I use an old Dell B110 as a file sharing an printer sharing. My comp just runs a MySQL DB for world of warcraft :) How much were your servers?

  • Nice MySQL!!! Eh the Dell series are OK, but you don't get a good idea of what performance and efficiency is until you work with a SPARC system. The servers cost a bit back when I got them, but one of them was free since the guy gave it to me. (There's an amazing story behind it I don't wish to go into great detail on here. Msg me if you want more) The setup has gotten increasingly more sophisticated since then, I should make a new video. Sometime in the future.

  • Never used a SPARC system before...hmm....

  • Have you?

  • did you know you can install yellow dog linux 5.0 on your PS3? just make sure you have HD out put other wise it wont install correctly. do you play COD4? if so whats your gamer tag.

  • Yes I did!!! I just don't want to do it at this moment, because I feel it is somewhat of a waste, because there's not too much I can do with it. Yes I do have COD4!!! I'm going to mail you with my tag, and some information so you may contact me.

  • Thanks!

  • Why do you like Sun Microsystems computers so much?

Just want to compare notes. I have put up videos from them during the UltraSPARC 1 and UltraSPARC-II days, which I miss because Sun was at their peak then.

I believe Sun will come back stronger, once they re-organize themselves. There is just too much amazing technology they have developed to fall by the wayside.

(A moment of silence for Silicon Graphics / SGI) ... hope they come back one day too.

  • Im thinking about building a web/vent/game/shoutcast server for under 400-500 bucks, problem is I dont know if Cox allows webservers.

  • pretty nice setup ;)

  • OUT A FING LIGHT ON TWO SODING DARK

  • I plain to buy a Sun Netra t1 105 to make a home web/file server, do it is loud ?
