I used to do that right before I folded my Damascus.
It blows any scale or crap right off the steel, and it is loud.

hehe i've wet forged at times i should not have and scared visitors to the bathroom. He was doing it to be a joker as all trademen are. But putting a film of water on your anvil and dipping your hammer face in water and forging like that is called wet forging. Something that the japanese swordsmiths have been doing for centuries, not only to i forge most of my blades that way also alot of artsy work as well, it leaves a kinda shing and a very scale free surface.
precisely, you do learn something everyday. one should take all opportunities afforded to them, even if they seem a bit non-conventional....

no, there was a bit of a negative on the anvil face that was filled with water, piece was heated to almost burning and then placed just above the water and struck with a strong blow........BOOOOOM! scared the shit out of the entire factory in Beijing that was filled with 400 chinamen
