An 11 year old moonwalks for Haiti
At lunchtime on 11 February, staff at the Vienna International Centre were given a rare treat by 10-year-old Samuel Martínez, who gave a dance performance to raise funds for children in Haiti. Samuel, who is the son of a UNODC staff member, moonwalked and rocked to the rhythm of Michael Jacksons Smooth criminal and Beat it before changing out of his black suit and white socks into hip-hop gear for some break-dancing. The spectators applauded and shouted encouragements during the performance, clearly pleased by the light interlude in the middle of a grey mid-winter, mid-week day.
The idea for the event came after Samuel won a talent contest at his school in Vienna. Inspired to help Haitian children affected by last months earthquake, he was encouraged to put his dancing talent to the service of a good cause. After the dance, he said that the songs he had chosen were his favourite and confessed to having been nervous, although no one watching wouldve believed it.
Samuel was encouraged by his parents and, most importantly, his school friend Gerhard Feitzinger, who stepped up to the microphone to introduce him to the crowd and to remind everyone to give generously to the cause. Approximately 150 staff members stopped in the rotunda to watch the dance and contribute donations, which at the end of the day amounted to 1,505 euros. The proceeds will be channelled through the UNOV/UNODC Staff Union and be used to support the work in Haiti of the Austrian non-governmental organization SOS-Kinderdorf.
