It is the International code to put into the plane's "transponder" that shows air traffic control where and who you are. When you enter or 'squack' 7700, your radar symbol blinks, telling controllers that you have an emergency. similar codes are 7500 'unlawful interfierence' (hijacking) and 7600 (lost communications)
