This is my HF mobile set up in my Volvo 940. Radio is a Yaesu FT857D and the antenna is a Yaesu ATAS 120. Also shown is my VHF/UHF radio, the superb Yaesu FT8900 Quadbander. Sorry for the wobbly video!! Hope To Catch You On Air.. Best 73s Ian, G0YAP

  • Are you just using the one PMR aerial with the 8900? If so how are you tuning it for the various bands? Sorry if that's a silly question. I just cant see you wanting to constantly change the whip every time you swap bands considering you have gone to the expense of the ATAS 120 for the FT857 lol

  • @powermax104 Hello again.. Although I have fitted a Quadbander, I only use 2 and 70 in the car so the dual band pmr antenna is just the job..when ATAS removed, it does not Ham radio.. that pleases the wife (it is, after all..her car:-))

  • love the video, great to see people that can show me that the ATAS-120 works, especially now that I have just purchased one and good to see it tune up on 17m and I assume it iwll do 15m... as for your wife's comment about the antenna... I found that insanely funny

  • @tekwatcher Hi, Thanks for comments.. My FT857D has been wide banded to tx from 1.8 thru to 50Mhz, The ATAS will tune anywhere within this range and beyond!! I like listening to the 31 mtr shortwave band and by tuning it up on there..the rx is fantastic, Works superb on CB bands as well. The perfect mobile HF set up:-)

  • Thanks for the video, slick set up. Just got an FT-857D for my Jeep Rubicon, waiting for the antenna (ATAS120) like yours. I wanted one radio that could do it all, as space in a Jeep is limited, I see you chose to have a second radio even though the 857 could cover that too, is this because you want to monitor both at the same time? I like that neat storage case you made also, very kool. 73's from the States. Gary -N1ICX

  • @dukwcapt Hi Gary. Thanks. I have the FT8900 in the car as well because, like you say, I like to monitor UHF/VHF whilst scanning the HF Bands. If I had to name the one thing that I would change about the FT857, I would like full dual display. That said, I think you will be very pleased with the performance of the ATAS 120. I seem to work anyone I hear. The only downside...the Price:-(

Maybe work you on 17 mtrs.

    Cheers

  • I have the same equipment: 857D and ATAS-120A; works fantastic as well, almost have zero issues. I have it permanently mounted on my VW bug as I don't take it out of the car. I do have a fannie pack which I use to carry my control head around when I leave the car parked outside. I might get a second 857D and ATAS for portable use (porta-pack) or the Icom IC7000 later this year.

  • LOL, Great video. I like the wife's comment. Cheers.
