In the run up to ratify the new constitution it was so clear that the status quo that benefited from the old constitution were opposed to change. It took the efforts of many actors in the public, civil society and international community to push for new constitutional dispensation. Former President Daniel Moi played a critical role in mobilizing some of the willing left-overs of KANU anti- reformists. The fight was tight such that some senior politicians such as Kalonzo Musyoka could not decide which side to support. This led to VP Mr. Kalonzo to be referred to as Watermelon. He could say he supports the constitution only to be quoted in other forums saying the contrary. Several of the ordinary Kenyans came out, mobilized through grassroots network and before the political elite knew the ground had shifted. This meant that for survival most politicians grudgingly supported the constitution. Bunge la Mwananchi played critical role in mobilizing the grassroots. They had several initiatives such as Warembo ni YES educating the public on the new constitution. George Nyongesa of Bunge la Mwananchi played a lead role in mobilizing the grassroots across the country such that when the results of referendum were announced, he convened a major press conference to demand resignation of Ministers Hon. William Ruto, Naomi Shaban and Samwel Poghisio among others.
