You would benefit from making the antenna resonant without the ATU. All it does it make the transmitter see 50ohms, so if the antenna isn't resonant it will be very inefficient and cause interference to others. Always work on the aerial and you will really boost your range. The ATU doesn't tune the antenna, it just matches impedances. Get a decent antenna analyser to set everything up and put the ATU to one side as you will not need it and ALL your power will be transmitted.

@mustardsucks In the UK (England&Wales)you are prosecuted and the fine is up to £5000,not including costs that can be applied for by OFCOM and/or up to 6months in prison. It's possible that could be a suspended sentence, so if you are caught again or commit any other criminal offences the sentence is activated and can run alongside each other or one after the other. Legal stations put pressure on OFCOM to prosecute pirates as they somehow think we don't have a choice of who we want to listen to!

SCOTLAND
Yes, you are right about this ATU. But i only use this to get the antenna resonant on several freq. without need to adjust, or use another antenna.
The antenna is resonant at 6250 khz, but with the ATU, i can switch to 49 m band without problems for the tx. Because he thinks to 'see' 50 ohms...
I know this is not the best solution, only the easy way!

are these considered "illegal" ?? if you get caught what happens? fine?
mustardsucks 2 years ago
Yes, it's illegal..And yes, if i get caught i got a fine. About 20 years ago there was also a change you had go to prison too. Not anymore now, the fine is around 500-1000 euro.
It depends if you had coursed interference.
But if you are active on FM the fine can be much higher: up to € 50.000!!
That's when you get caught many times in a row.
Some NL pirates on FM are using transmitters up to 20 KW!. With antenna masts high as 100 meters...
