I always got a kick out of how Monk would go wayyyyyy back for tunes to cover, Tin Pan Alley type stuff.

@theamazingpurist I bet he was too busy being an artist to think about whether or not he could play the piano.

I bet he thought he could play the piano.

To me, Thelonious Sphere Monk is a Divine Being sent to bestow musical blessings upon us earthly types with ears to hear....

BetterTasteThanU? I saw another comment from him on Miles Davis's "In a Silent Way" attacking it for being "elevator music". I guess he's just a troll.

Monks playing is by far some of the most angular and dissonant I've ever heard in jazz. His style is instantly recognizable and this compositions like round midnight and Blue Monk have become backbone standards I think every jazz cat should know. Love his playing, Check out my solo piano version of it with vocals on my you tube page, and please check out my other jazz videos while your there! Dont forget to subscribe please!!!!!

God, love Monk's playing. I saw Sun Ra and his band a LOT in the late '80s and early '90s, and his style was somewhat similar. Probably more like Ellington, but he definitely played a lot like Monk, too,

I like Joe Beck's version which he did on his HOT LICKS instructional video.

Everything live at the Pershing, and in here (Youtube) there's a live performance which is called "Darn that dream" (like this song here, although it's not the same) which is quite good too.
@BetterTasteThanU you have no taste!

It's funny...when I first heard Monk play, my first reaction was similar to that of BetterTasteThanU. Then later on, the raw beauty of Monk's playing pierced awe into me.
