ஐரோப்பிய ஒன்றிய நாடாளுமன்றத் தேர்தலில் சுயேச்சையாகப் போட்டியிட்ட இலங்கைத் தமிழ்ப் பெண் ஜனனி ஜனநாயகம் வெற்றி பெறத் தவறினார். எனினும் 50 ஆயிரம் வாக்குகளுக்கும் மேலாகப் பெற்று புதிய சாதனையைப் படைத்துள்ளார்.


லண்டன் பகுதியிலிருந்து சுயேச்சையாகப் போட்டியிட்டிருந்தார் ஜனனி. அவருக்கு புலம் பெயர்ந்த தமிழர்கள் பேராதரவு தெரிவித்திருந்தனர். இலங்கைப் பெண்ணான பிரபல பாடகி மாதங்கி மாயா அருள் பிரகாசம் (எம்.ஐ.ஏ.) வும் ஆதரவு தெரிவித்திருந்தார்.

ஜனனி வெற்றி பெற்றால் இலங்கைத் தமிழர்களின் அவலம், ஐரோப்பிய நாடாளுமன்றத்தில் அவர் மூலமாக ஒலிக்கும், விடிவு காலம் பிறக்கும் என்ற எதிர்பார்ப்பு இருந்தது.

ஆனால் துரதிஷ்டவசமாக ஜனனி தோல்வியுற்றார். இருப்பினும் கூட, 50 ஆயிரத்துக்கும் அதிகமான வாக்குகளைப் பெற்று புதிய சாதனை படைத்து விட்டார் ஜனனி.
Independent candidate in the European Union elections in London, Ms. Jan Jananayagam, failed to secure a seat. Out of the eight London seats, the main opposition Conservative Party took three (and almost 480,000 votes) and the ruling Labour Party two (with almost 373,000 votes). One seat each went to the Liberal Democrats, the Green Party and the UK Independent Party.
Her campaign was carried out on a Stop Genocide call alleging that the Sri Lankan military was on a campaign of ethnic cleansing in the island.
