The Sidereal zodiac is not the constellations of stars. The 12 classical ecliptic constellations vary in length; some much longer than 30 degrees and some much shorter. The sidereal zodiac is a division of the sky into 12 equal segments, starting from a fixed point, such that at least a big chunk of each constellation falls in each segment. As there is controversy over which star starts the zodiac, Indian astrologers use various Ayanamshas, or starting points.
