Protest The Hero is not Between The Buried & Me. There's something we can all agree on. Get over it and move on, kids.

@Susyownsyou if you haven't heard of them i highly recommend you check out bands like cynic, control denied, atheist, and late death that is going to be a lot along the lines of what your talking about and definitely the best metal there is out there.

@guitargod85225 the piano part is the ending of Desiderata

Im a hard core btbam fan and I just discovered THA and I dont understand why we have to compare! Why cant we all just appreciate 2 sic bands?
-
I don't think then BTAM and THA can be compared, they play two completely differents music genre.

@milesssymusic they are not constant solo's you idiot they are lead riffs which i happen to like, or would you prefer just chug chug chug

@TheRayven760 Once I started listening to Dream Theater all this fast playing stuff just doesn't seem as interesting. Cause lots of things people play fast are actually harder to slow down like half a time signature. It sounds weird on paper. But it's actually correct. That why I like how Opeth made their Heritage album. They really showed how technical they really could be despite people wanting to hear, to quote you, "Easy listening music" But overall Prog metal is just titties...just titties.

@Pianomantodd1 3 Oh and I actually meant Amon Amarth. But I've never heard of Tobin. I'll have to check him out

@Pianomantodd1 2/2 Western music could be considered a general, overarching style, but beyond the basic time measurements, I think how one studies music is varied by the "ethnic" region they wish to study. The range of one note for us could contain three to an Indian man's ears, and a major scale which produces a melodic perception in our brain (which is a biological phenomenon) could be dissonant noise to an African Bushman (also biological). If you call it style, I understand :)
Here's the deal folks: BTBAM is fantastic. Technically proficient and absolutely insane musically, but they're not an easy listening group. THA is fantastic. Technically proficient and musically insane as well, but lack the BTBAM intensity, making them easier to rock out to, but not as much of a musical challenge to listen to. I personally prefer THA to BTBAM, but they're both friggin badass.

@shjervenst I think BtBaM is better, but that's just me.
