Bless the marshals out on the course, but they can't be everywhere at once. Thankfully, everyone knows a little self-policing goes on during these races. Keep an eye on the guy in the blue shorts. He was drafting far longer than I was videoing. At one point, me and another guy ask him if he planned to draft the whole race?

There were a few events going on that morning, an Olympic and sprint distance triathlon and an Olympic and sprint distance duathlon. This guy was doing the sprint triathlon. Hey, if being called out for cheating during a race doesn't do it, then perhaps a little public humiliation on YouTube later will.

  • He isn't the only one drafting by the way, they ALL are,or are in position violations, inlcuidng the biker with the videocam. The "drafter" made multiple legal passes, and before the filmer cuts off the feed, he is in a position violation himself. Lots of "fault" to spread in this vid. No one is innocent.

  • @82678267 Absolutely no position violation or drafting on the part of the person with the videocam. None.

  • Not used to looking at races through a camera lens at this angle, so I'll take your word for it since you were there. I think this problem needs to be addressed by a change in the rules (drafting/position) since it can't be evenly enforced. This was even a problem at the last Clearwater 70.3 championship (on YouTube as well), from people who should know the rules the best. Good video, though frustrating to watch.

  • @aridavidpaul Got it. Again, principle and good sportsmanship mean nothing to you. You race just to beat the clock, while others like to actually compete and see how they measure up against others.

  • @Tobytuber If you're playing golf with friends, its a direct competition. If I win, you lose. In a triathlon with hundreds of entrants, you're just competing against the clock. I couldn't care less if my competitors take steroids because it doesn't effect my time at all. Same with drafting - my "score" isn't influenced. For professional athletes (or even world class amateurs), its a whole different story. if you're not finishing top 10 at Kona, other racers times have no impact on you.

  • @aridavidpaul I guess principle and good sportsmanship mean nothing to you. Tell me, when you play golf, basketball, ping pong, or whatever with your buddies, would you allow them to cheat on their scores?

  • @Tobytuber "Cheating" is only a meaningful concept when there's something at stake. It's like saying you're cheating by not "rinse and repeating" like the shampoo bottle instructs.

  • @aridavidpaul Cheating seams to bother some people more than others. I'm glad you're ok with it though. Good for you.

  • Why on earth would you care if he's drafting? Neither of you are competing for a prize. Get over yourself and just enjoy the race.
