"you're probably..the most famous artist in Britain.."
This is one of the last clips of Tony Hart on mainstream television. Also, did you know that Tony Hart was in an episode of BANZAI, 'faking it' as a youth club DJ..? He had a great sense of humour in general! ;)
......Tony with Ricky Gervais 2000..Have to agree about Tracey Emin, although you shouldn't blame Vision On for her 'talent'..In this full interview Tony Hart and Ricky Gervais discuss, among other things, Leonardo and the his drawr-ins, Van Gogh, prostitutes..hmmmn Hart plays it straight (which is default anyway) in the tongue-in-cheek show while Gervais takes conversation into uncharted directions, (and Penny Smith doesn't participate much - really not on..but also quite wise)

****Though I didn't like parts of it, the presenter isn't directly trying to deride his guest. Personally I don't think Ricky Gervais is all that cruel in this, as some make out..It WAS an irreverent comedy chat show (though I still think that PEN-15 club joke was crass, probably could have been in the 'Jonathan Ross Guidebook' to cringeworthy and smutty comments). So, it's got a laddish, sarcastic Frank Skinner-ish feel (not abuse like the Andrew Sachs calls..), and Tony Hart would have been going along with it I'm sure. The guy has been cluey enough to succeed in television for many decades so he knew it would be a bit rude. For instance he doesn't seem THAT offended by any of the questions.
Gervais himself has mocked this show with this disclaimer:
"It was a mistake to use my own name...I thought people would understand that I was playing..Billy Bigot. Some people really did seem to think that I thought famine was a good thing.." (wiki)

http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/tonyhart/ the government e-petition to recommend an OBE ended 18 January 2008... a year to that date Tony Hart passed on...

http://coastalrocket.blogspot.com/2007/12/tony-hart-deserves-obe.html (quote from someone's site)

True fans sign the Tony Hart petition NOW!! (by Jan 18 2008) for a New Year's honour, as he's over eighty having served decades (unlike many honoured) as a gentleman teacher with a magic touch to inspire millions: http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/tonyhart/ "Tony Hart is now 80 years old. During his 50 years of broadcasting he has probably enspired the creative efforts of youngsters more than anyone else. For that reason i think he should be rewarded with an acknowledgement of his gentle tutelage to this nation."

  • As an irreverent comedy chat show it's got a Frank Skinner tongue-in-cheek feel (not ABUSE like the Andrew Sachs calls..), and Tony Hart would have been going along with it I'm sure..The guy has been cluey enough to succeed in television for many decades so he knew it would be a bit rude.

  • For such a gentle and quiet man, Tony in his younger years enrolled in the Indian Army with the 1st Gurkha Rifles. That alone commands a fair bit of respect. But I suppose Gervais, the talentless prick, would not know what a Ghurka was anyway. He probably thinks its a pickled vegetable at the centre of his Quarter Pounder with cheese.. Poor Tony.

  • yeah you're right.. I'm not that convinced that Gervais was really being 'himself' though. He's not quite as crass as the other two buffoons.. As for Hart, he wasn't some flash-in-the-pan TV star from those days. Desperate onflicts like 1939 were everyday life and being in the Gurkas was a topic of modesty for him (in REAL wars against invaders) ..then began in TV after periods of setbacks in his career in art.

  • Gervais makes himself look a proper cunt here. I'm aware the clip has been heavily edited but Gervais just won't shut the fuck up and his comments are offensive given who Tony Hart is and the way he's responding to Ricky's questions.

  • RIP tony heart

  • He hasn't let her speak yet!

  • Comedy gold, no wonder you call Gervaise a fat talentless cunt. You have just cornered the market on making retarded comments, carry on regardless.

  • tranquility321: Likewise, I'm sure.

Now go back and get that sodding broom.

    Floors don't sweep themselves.

  • hear hear Kabogga!

  • The horrible drivel that you typed here would make anyone sad.

  • When Ricky said'Who is your favourite painter of all time?' ,You can see Mr Hart's eyes. And he's probably thinking, 'Has it come to this? Being interviewed by this fat, talentless cunt?'

Makes you sad to think about it... :-(

  • quite painfull to watch

  • He's just using material on him - shame really ... rather embarassing ...

  • Erm..... Ok.

  • It was hardly a chatshow. Chat implies a two-way conversation. The guests were invited to listen to Gervais.

He asked Tony Hart a couple of questions at the beginning and showed no interest in the answers, then monologued for the rest of the "interview".
