Upgrading your prefacelift BMW E46 to have a DCT Steptronic Knob and DCT M shift pattern

EVERYONE! They sell the fake non-lit versions on eBay for around $60 now! They also sell an aftermarket retrofit kit using a geniune bmw dct shifter for around $399 and up on eBay. So please please stop asking me where to get it!!! You can also call or visit your local BMW Dealership and order it for $200!




Because my car is a 2001 E46, the original pattern of my steptronic M plate was + above -. After the DCT shifter retrofit I decided to upgrade the steptronic indicator plate and switch the purple/blue wires around under the plate so the M upshift and downshift coincided with the pattern on the DCT shifter and matched the actual shifting pattern of all BMW sports steptronic cars from 2002 to present.

For a horrible moment I thought you'd just swaped the cosmetics round rather than changing the up-down shift pattern to match. Tthank god you did the job properly!

@crofty1984 yeah. I'm not that vain. I do the job properly. That said, I didn't really like it after I did the job. Funny thing is now they sell the bootleg plastic imitations on eBay out of Tawain. And now BMW has them on the new 2012 3 series. So I guess we can all agree where they got the idea from.

Thats a nice car!!! My mom had a 199 blanking on year. It was probably a 1997. Who knows. I have a question for you. Are there any column shifters on a bmw? Thanks and have a great day!

So shifting up/down is fully electric? Basically you can add diy paddle shifter too??

@hkdvdmovies not all cars have steptronic the same. Maybe your tranny is a DCT or SMG. Either way I can't tell you whats wrong if I can't see your car plus I don't have a z4.

@CHOOBYco put it in neutral, squeeze with both hands and pull the bastard off........ try not to knock yourself out by banging it into your face..... I know of someone who knocked himself out, his head landed onto the exposed metal rod which went straight through his eye and into his brain. BMW reply: das ist nicht sehr gut!! should take to dealer
