The sure sign of a rotational tornado vortex is if the clouds are rotating in a certain direction. I live in Minnesota 1 hour away from where the Hugo Tornado had hit and was in the town 10 minutes before the twister hit. Me and my grandma booked it out of Hugo in were in North Branch right when the twister hit and at my house when the severe thunderstorms with possible F1 and F2 Tornados sited in the more rural area of North Branch had hit. Tornados are not something to joke about don't joke

it all depends on where you are before the storm. it could be the sun's rays bouncing off the cloud giving off that yellowish color. but the clouds doing that barrel roll as you say can mean that there's either going to be squall line , maybe a derecho, and it could be 1 warning sign that the storm is beginning to rotate. that is if the clouds trun into a grass green then you're screwed because the storm is rotating and will drop a twister any second. pst. i learned that the hard way.
