some U.S. companies like insurance companies, phone companies or just a on-line business will hire customer service operators located in international countries like India, Nigeria, Jamaica etc. because its cheaper. So when your talking to a operator you might think they are in the U.S. They ask you for your name and number to verify your call(stand procedures). These operators will then sell your information to the local scammers for a fee....

My mothers elderly friend lost about 400k.
She was in the process of buying another home and from sale of previous home put all her money into a dodgy off shore account, nigerian scam it transpired.
She is now homeless and broke aged 76.
Living with her dead beat daughter on a sofa.Very sad.

this is the direct result of out of control corporatism in that our current system creates few "affluent" areas in the world and the rest is left desperate. of course there are desperate people with integrity who would never steal from seniors but if there was more even distribution of wealth created from exploited resources this kind of thing would be a lot less common.
