Shelties are the best dogs in the world, period. There isn't another dog with the intelligence (x5), loyalty (x10), love (x5), dependibility, and hardiness of the venerable Shetland Sheepdog.

That was not amazing

my sheltie has the sleeker coat, they are born that way, she gets fuller as winter comes on but never full like the puffy shelties, but she could be a sleek coated show sheltie, had I have bought a show dog. I have to spell car, treats, and if we accidentally curse she assumes we are argueing and shelties are very peace loving dogs, and don't want their owners to fight or argue, she gets nervous and stays by my side at any sign of conflict. from any person including my husband. she protects me

Good Girl!

@empouse its because show dogs get there hair done to be like that

@empouse you would brush it ALOT. Also some shelties are just born with puffy coats, and some without. it also depends what time of year it is. if it is in the summer then they probably have a thinner coat because they shed alot. In winter, the opposite. they grow lots of fur to keep warm. i kno this because of my own experience with shelties. they are very loyal and kind-hearted dogs. <3

Not bad. I have two shelties. I love them more than life itself. I will say that teaching them is very easy comparted to other dogs b/c they have an overwhelming need to please their owners. I shouldn't be hard to teach them without the treat so readily available to them...keep working at it...you'll be surprised what they can pick up.

@ClueSign We've spelled for so long that our 2 Shelties immediately suspect something is up whenever we spell anything. We've had to come up with new ways of subterfuge, such as "the big dog" or "the little dog", but they've both come to know the word "dog", so we went to "Mister L" and "Mister J" and now they suspect anything with "mister" in it. They're smart dogs :-)

shes like my tricolor! he is thin with a thinner coat! why is that???

Pups that are neutered early on don't get as fluffy a coat either.

wow i care
I noticed that she doesn't have as much of a puffy coat as the show dogs. Why is this? I really like them without the big huge puffy coat, so I was wondering if I got my own sheltie, how I would keep it like that.

We have one puffy one and one that is not. It depends on their parents. The shampoo and the climate are irrelevant. If the parents are puffy, guess what the pup will be? =)

We have to spell so many words around our house -- even in casual conversation, if we mention anything related to our sheltie, Sarah, we find she is always tuned in and listening, and usually five steps ahead of the game. I think she's as smart as the kids were when they were toddlers! (and mmuch more obedient...)

That's funny. We have to do the same thing with certain words such as "mailbox". We've also had to clean up our language as April does not like ANY profanity.
