My attempt to show the Formosan subterranean termite exhibiting trail following behavior with ball point pen ink. The green Sharpie elicits no response. I also try a figure 8.

  • Termite nascar.

  • When a termite leaves its nest, the termite secrete a pheromone so they can follow it back to their nest. The ink mimics the smell of this pheromone and that's why they follow the ink trail. Only some types of pens can mimic the pheromone like papermate.

  • I think the biro sorry ballpoint ink is slightly sticky even when dry (oil based), as against the solvent based marker. Might be a tactile thing.
