Lacuna Coil - Interview (Metalmania 1999)

An old interview with Cristina and Andrea, from Metalmania 1999 (Ohh the good times :) ). It's from a channel called Atomic, and dubbed in Polish. If it's unclear, here's a pretty accurate translation ha ha

I: Welcome to Poland. We've been waiting for you on Metalmania last year, but you didn't show up. What was the reason for the absence?

C: The reason was that we didn't have passports, because no one told us that we needed them to come to Poland, so we've spent the night in a hotel at the border. It was so funny, staying there and not doing anything. We're sorry, but we're finally here.

I: Let's talk about your history.

A: We started in the end of 95, with the 1st lineup. We recorded a 2 track demo tape in 96, and sent it to all the important metal lables. We've chosen Century media, because it suited our style, attitude. So far it's a good choice. After that we went to Germany in november of 97, and recorded our firts ep 'Lacuna Coil' with 6 tracks. We started the tour in december, with Moonspell, a promo tour, 1 concert in each country. After that we changed the lineup, and played the next shows with session musicians. From the old lineup stayed me, Cristina, and the bass player. And now we've got 2 new guitar players and a new drummer. The current band has been together for about a year and a half. we've recorded our debut album in nov of 98, in woodhouse studios, Hagen Ger. with Waldemar Sorychta as the producer. It's our first real album, because we all we're on the same page as to the musical direction. It really represents us.

I: Your first album is 'In a reverie', what is it about, what are the main topics you explore in your lyrics ?

C: It depends. It's not a real concept album, there isn't a main theme to all the songs. We try to explore different things. We write about love, freedom, everyday life, everything. It depends on the song. I.e. 'Honeymoon Suite' is a very ironic title. It's about a relationship between a man and a woman, that fight for love, and a honeymoon suite is a place that should be sweet and full of love. 'Stately Lover' talks about the rejection of the rules of society, not because we are anarchists, or anything, but we want to be free in our choices. We know we're not doing anything wrong, but we reject the rules that the society imposes upon you.

A: We try to put all our negative experiences and emotions, and convert them into positive energy, in our life and music.

C: I think that maybe with the firs EP, there were reasons to compare us with The Gathering, because we have the female vocals, the style is quite the same, but right now we're definitely different, and they can comfirm it because we toured with them, and talked about our music. I think we're completely different. This album is more powerful, we've chose another dirrection, now we have infuences from Pink Floyd, and psychodelic stuff, but we want to stay metal, because we love heavy metal, maybe the next album will be even more powerful. And we have 2 different singers, we sing together.

Because the band Never really went on the downlow once they started getting publicity so i'm sure i would of seen it.
