Incredible yirdaki made by Jason Guwanbal Gurruwiwi

What a stunner! I haven't heard a yirdaki quite like this, with that deep thunderous quality in the key of C#. The voice is superb for such a low key. To have acoustic traction, acoustic elasticity, loudness, high back pressure, an easy and natural interval between fundamental and overtone notes... all this packaged into a shapely 170 cm of timber is just unbelievable.

Jason Guwanbal is a son of Djalu's brother, and so calls Djalu 'father'. He is a manikaymirr, a respected songman who is in demand at ceremonies in the Gove region and at Elcho Island. He is a member of Rripangu Yirdaki and has performed publicly in Albury-Wodonga on the Victorian-NSW border, as well as in Melbourne... at popular venues such as Monsalvat and the Northcote Social Club. His favourite food is sushi!

In the clip, Jason's brother Larry Winiwini goes ballistic. He makes it sound easy as though he were playing an F#, with machine-gun staccato rhythms in the prelude... crazy stuff. After Winiwini, Djalu himself gives this yirdaki a workout - so you can compare the two styles. And to think Djalu was having an off day, complaining of the flu. The Master rules!

The last segment shows Jason Guwanbal - in a red shirt sitting down - participating at the funeral of a Rirratjingu relative, leading the singing for the Galpu in Alfred Gurritjiri's absence.
