Un des meilleurs musicologues de Fauré, Jean-Michel Nectoux, écrit : "(Cette sonate) est une oeuvre d'une grande concentration......Toute la fin de la première sonate pour violoncelle et piano est une immense envolée d'une exubérance et d'une luminosité magnifiques".
Interprétée par Pierre Fournier et Éric Heidsieck.
