What I love about this film is how it takes the piss out of the English. They are either depicted as living in squalor (compared to luxury in Australia) or sexually perverted upper class idiot degenerates, which of course is absolutely true. Australians were once worried that the film would show Australians in a poor light when all this time the opposite has been the case.

You're right and I think that's what they (the producers) were aiming for. At the time many Australian felt a bit embarrassed by this film because we had this cultural cringe. We still thought we had to be a little piece of England in the Pacific. I was part of the last generation to sing 'God save the Queen' as our national anthem.
