A LOT of people say it's utterly pants but if you get a pre 2005 ish ( i think that was the most recent change in chip) Boss DS-1, I've never had any problems with a change in tone and/or distortion going from placebo to nirvan and sonic youth to even heavy metallica. It and my Big Muff are my main stays in distortion. I usually darken the tone with my old morley wah on my kicked all the way back and staying untouched from there.

yeah, I agree with you...actually it´s a fantastic pedal, EXH Hot Tubes, but I just had it a few days and the settings were rubbish

hey, just look for "stichfam" in the youtube search, he will give you the gretsch blues...
