that hammer is just fine the way it is, if you play with the hammer wires, it becomes weak and more vulnerable to break, leaving things original keeps the value high.

Don't get me wrong, I was just commenting on the sound. It would sound much better if it struck on the flat. I have several of these clocks and mine are origional . Have a different setup for the gong but they do strike the flat area. It was only my opionion and I was only giving my 2 cents. If you leave it origional that's fine too.

Next time I have one of these in for repair, I'll try to remember to video the bell striking.

The hammer of the gong is in the wrong place should hit gong on the flat surface

You are correct theoretically, but not practically. In this instance, the hammer is very near the end of the wire. To locate the hammer over the flat part would require bending the hammer wire severely, perhaps causing it to touch the mainspring. The way the hammer wire is in this movie is the way it left the Seth Thomas factory, the tone sounds excellent, and I believe in leaving things as original where possible; therefore I left the hammer head in its current position.
