Wade Mainer, who passed away a few days ago, on September 12, 20011, at the rather extraordinary age of 104, was one of the earliest champions of mountain music, and an important forerunner of Bluegrass. He was also a major influence on banjo picking style, influencing such stars as Earl Scruggs. He began playing and singing on the radio as early as 1932, and sang for President and Mrs. Roosevelt in 1941, the same year he was recorded by folklorist John A. Lomax.
