Quiz Show Contestant Herbert Stempel discusss how in 1956, he wrote to the producers of the new quiz show, "Twenty One" and was invited to become a contestant on the popular program. Mr. Stempel talks about his repeated appearances, and his orchestrated defeat by Charles Van Doren -- before which he was promised a job on the show. When the job did not come through, Mr. Stempel approached the authorities, further igniting what became known as the "Quiz Show Scandals." There's an interview with Albert Freedman here on youtube. It's been a while since I've watched it and I didn't have my full attention on the video, but he does mention something about Stemple losing the money. And he doesn't like Stemple. Also, it seems surreal, but he defended the practice of fixing game shows. IMO, Freedman wasn't likeable or trustworthy; Herb seems like a nicer and decent guy. Freedman was played by Hank Azaria in the movie, Quiz Show.

You can get the answer in "All the Answers," the essay Van Doren wrote for The New Yorker in 2008.

Incredible. Herb Stemple testifies every day for the Transit Authority. Can you imagine. A proven liar have the audacity to make a living by testifying under oath.

No one thought a thing about it. It's business as usual
