I was relatively new to northern fishing and this proved to be a good lesson for me. I know now first hand how sharp there gills are. The fish swam off just fine and I'm hoping to catch him again next year.

Is that a creek that dumps into the DesPlaines or the Desplaines?

It is at the mouth of a creek. there are several different creeks that feed into the Des Planes and they all produce fish.

try the upper des plaine in gurnee and wadsworth where the lake county forest preserve is i caught plenty big pike there in the summer on a lipless gold shiner crank bait and a booyah spinnerbait a little up the trail by grand avnue rite before gurnee mills, and independnce grove has nice pike fishing on spinnerbaits
