Actually Johnny lobbied very hard for Dave to take over the show. Johnny felt embarressed when he didn't get the show, because he all but promised it to Dave. Johnny pretty much divorced himself from NBC upon retirement, and made his last TV apperance on Dave's CBS show.

go read the wiki page on David Letterman. There are interviews where Carson believed that The Tonight Show belonged to Letterman after he was done.
