There was a Mythbusters episode where they showed that the artifical sweetener in the Diet Coke reacted better than regular Coke.

Broomstick sanded down to fit a 2-liter soda bottle, and a notch cut into it near the top to fit an O-ring that allows the bottle to build pressure. Hose clamp, string, and tent pegs to hold the broomstick in place. Drop in the mentos, put the bottle on the broomstick and push down over the o-ring, let build pressure, and nudge free.
