Gameplay footage from the textmode shooter "Monsterland". Initially developed by me and my cousin for DOS in 1996, then ported into native Win32 console version in 2006.

Features 2-player cooperative play over LAN, saving/loading in single- and multiplayer, non-linear level travel, an editor, traps, lightsourcing, driveable vehicles and more.

Only 40x25, 80x25, 80x50 CGA/EGA textmodes are used for portraying the visuals in 16 glorious colors !

  • Not bad for a high school project.

  • @w0mblemania Thank you, I was a teenager when I initially wrote this. If you use Internet Wayback machine you will find Monsterland (p)reviews from 1996-1997 era, by GamesDomain and SHMUPS!

  • wow, this is awesome. Never ceases to amaze me what text can do.

  • @Ombrenuit Thanks. Stay tuned for an updated video where it became a text/tile hybrid ;)

  • where can i learn how to do something like this. I know a lot about object oriented programming, but how can i use the little i know to do some as such. I love the game.

  • @Incogneto100 This game was written in Pascal, and the code has no objects. In the end, the language is not important. What's important is basic understanding of how a game works, and you can get that from following some simple tutorials on the web, and/or trying to make a simple game of your own (such as a Lode Runner or a Frogger clone).

  • Monsterland is fucking awesome! In-your-face, blood-splattering, monster-bashing, text-mashing, old-school fun!

  • I played this a long long time ago.. the old DOS version. I think I met you on IRC like 10 years ago :)
