Count the number of signatures plus the front and back cover. For emaple if you have four signatures plus the covers use a length of thread equal to six times the height or length of the book.

Is a "signature" one folded page or a folded page within a folded page?

If you use only one folded sheet, the thread can tear or rip it at the fold when you sew it. Traditionally we use 4 or more sheets folded in half. It just depends on how much paper you have and how many signatures you want to use. Just experiment but use more than one sheet. Good luck!

Thank you for the instruction! What is the best way to punch holes into the signatures?

Thanks for the comment. I use a sharp need or an awl. Awls come in all sized and prices. The least expensive is a dissecting kit needle or a needle in a wooden handle found in the clay area of a craft store. Just ask at a craft store and you will find one. Just remember that you the hole only needs to be large enough for the needle and thread. good luck

With a twisted fiber, as you are using to stitch the book; the act of sewing will impart more twist which makes it try to knot upon itself (as in making a twisted cord [examples on youtube]) or untwist it until the plies separate. It depends upon which end of the fiber you are starting from (z vs. s twist). When it starts to knot itself, or come apart; if you drop the needle and run your fingers over the fiber to help it untwist, you will eliminate either problem.

What kind of thread did you use, the gauge, manufacturer, etc. Thanks for your help.

Thanks very much for posting this! I'm always so thrilled when I find free, solid instructions online and really appreciate that you took the time to give such detailed information. Today I made three coptic journals and enjoyed every moment of it. What a wonderful way to use up my scraps of handmade papers and give myself something awesome in which to sketch all at the same time!

How do you estimate how much string you'll need per project?

Thanks for this - I was looking all around for something without a hard cover. Your trick with the thread in the first section (cover in this case) was EXACTLY what I needed.
