Of course Death was the first to be a true Death Metal band but how many other Death Metal bands try to sound like them? They have there own Death Metal sound more unique than other DM. So that is why I say Cannibal Corpse was the first to make THAT kind of DM.

It's understandable to confuse with early death metal bands with thrash because the thrash technique was there the only difference is well. Vocals and guitar riffs go a little more heavier than thrash with a brute sound . That's why I would have to say Cannibal Corpse was actually the first to revolutionize Death Metal into what it is today (hence the signature death growl's and few riffs different from thrash). I say Athiest is more like Brutal Thrash metal

@mistersusan1471 I could see why this would be considered Thrash. There are some thrash acts out there that are really just fucking brutal. For me Atheist is thrash with really heavy vocals. The more interesting this is what they do instrumentally with all the jazz. Forget classifying bands like this. Just recognize That it's metal and wish it longevity.
