A short video of newly restored Seafire XVII, SX336 (G-KASX), departing The Shuttleworth Collection's Military Pageant held at Old Warden, Beds, UK, on 4.6.06 where it made it's public debut.
your right i suppose camerameister, and the mustang with the merlin was very good anyway, so the increase in performance from the griffon was deemed to be not needed
@animalian01 Probably because they used Packard Merlins which were built in the US.
I don't think the US ever built Griffons.
I guess altering the Mustang to take a Griffon wouldn't have been that difficult. A redesign of the engine mounts, a slight lengthening of the fuselage aft of the C of G and trim for anti-clockwise prop. As far as I know, there was at least one Griffon engined Mustang being used for pylon racing in the US.
The Griffon was intended to be one of a group of "interchangeable" 2000hp engines so had to go round the same way as those of Bristol, Napier and Armstrong-Siddley.
The Merlin however was widely used in the States where most engines rotated the same way so it was left alone. Not for the first time what the US wants the US gets!
@Camerameister Correct, Precious Metal runs a Griffon.

@quorneng Why would the direction of rotation be an issue?
