  • 5:46 makes me laugh every time! Hahaha

  • who was the guy @5.37?

  • The guy who got kicked in the head on 5:37 got a fractured skull!

  • jimmyp is right about the guards. In boxing you can afford a high guard , not having the low stuff to deal with.

If you kept your hands up by your face, you wouldn't be as easily able to for example parry a mae geri.

  • It's the other way round - boxers can afford to have a high guard, because they never have to block anything below the waist. If you keep your hands up by your head in this game, you'll get continually stung with lower kicks such as mae geris and waist high mawashi geris, as you can't get your hands down fast enough to block.

  • I think they don't have high guards because the hands are used to block attacks from the waist upwards. Their guards are therefore exactly in the middle of where they need to be.

And I can see PLENTY of people getting punched (and kicked) in the face in this clip, and I'm fairly sure that it won't have been the first time for each of them...

  • oh then theres lyoto machida...theres a clip of him doing some kumite somewhere...his stand up game blatently shows his shotokan skills...and leg kicks:S

  • agreed...

however...im sure chris cray knows what he's doing...he fights with a mad low guard but his counter punching style is so effective that he doesnt need a high guard...he's pretty vicious.

A lot of the younger seniors and juniors have higher guards though...perhaps UFC is having an impact

  • No they dont, They dont have high guards because there not used to getting punched in the face. Like beginner boxers they start with their hands down after their first sparring sessions they never leave their hands down again. Sadly Karate doesnt have that contact there for never learning the importance of a high gaurd.

wanna put my theory to the test train thai boxing for a week.

  • Nice to see a nth Dan black belt doing the do! Doesn't show much concern for the people he's just chinned, only competition, spirit of the thing etc.
