  • I want to get a JD-990. Will it have the same sound as the JD-800?

  • @paulandtify

the sound is a bit different

  • retrosound72, are you using any cartridges or is this built in samples? Are any of the cartridges good? I know there is a Jupiter cartridge, does it have good samples? Is there any other way to get different samples into the jd800 other than cartridges?

  • @BlueIzzzs

i use only the internal samples

the string ensemble card is good

  • Retrosound: Did you use any particular SL-JD80 card for this session?

  • no card used

  • I had one of these for a short time. It scared me stiff. It's a monser out of control. it has a mind of it's own. Built to survive the Atom bomb, and make your neighbours move house. thinking they have ghosts. Just turn the lights down, and you have more lights than JFK airport, more controls than the starship enterprise. This is a classic, but, heavy bulky. Doctors health check recommended before owning one, not for the faint hearted. Grab one while you can. Thanks for posting. LOL .

  • Sounds like Geoff Downs of Asia!

  • Is that Solina sound from the internal sounds of the jd?

  • Marko do you sell them Wav Samples i was going to buy a JD800 years ago but i got a Wavestation EX both are very good for pads ;-)

  • @paulandtify - I'm pretty sure the JD-990 was a super-charged JD-800. I think it was even called the Super JD. I think it had more samples and more preset programs. But one of the JD-800 major strengths was the fact that it had sliders and lots of buttons...easy to program. I think you could even program/control the 990 with the 800...very cool.

  • @paulandtify The JD-990 can do the same as JD-800 but also more. I think of JD-990 as the successor really. But they have alot in common.

  • Trouble with the book is that prices are a lot less than in ads now. Buying one without seeing it seems a big risk but finding synths of any make in ads nearby is not easy! All the ones I like are far away. Some ads keep moving towns so you don't know how to plan a visit to the place it's supposed to be or if the ad is genuine at all. How can the same prophet 5 in the Orkneys now be in Manchester? I wrote to an ad 5 times but they didn't reply. not even to say they'd sold it.

It does have quite a bit of learning curve but IMO the sound is totally worth it. I am a bit of a preset hound so I got a 2nd memory card since I found so many killer presets online for my JD. There are two manuals, one to get familiar with the synth and another fatter manual to really dig into it. Roland wanted people to put in some effort to learn this synth. In Jenkins' book (which is really cool) he also says the JP8000 "seemed limited" when compared to the JD800.

  • some space sounds!!! Roland is a good brand!! we use it (for ever!!!)
