A foothold in Libya

Vladimir Putin has met Libya's leader, Muammar Gaddafi, in the capital Tripoli. It's the first visit of a Russian head of state to the oil-rich country. The two sides have already agreed on the amount of debt Libya owes Russia dating back from the Soviet era.

@McAberdeen may be has said fart, but Gaddafi is no fart, he is very persent, clever and a wise and honest man. Of course US ans NATO war propaganda must make him a killer, idiot etc. to get the war they want. Also his son Saif is a very honest young man.

@translationwiz Arafat said plenty of things. He said the PLO wasn't training Palestinian kids to hate the Jews, and that they weren't hiding rockets to fire at Israel.

Qaddafi, like all Soviet allies (such as Saddam Hussein and Hafez Assad), was the beneficiary of enormous shipments of cheap weapons and munitions from the Soviet Union. The Soviets never transferred any of the funds for these over to the US.

@DrCruel Not me Doc. Heikal wrote that in his book, Secret Channels. Arafat responded, how can they help us? They are starving. THe money was transferred to cover wheat shipments. They had little time to make the next payment. Gaddafi bought the tanks b/c of a Russian plea for money in 1973. Its all in the book. Qat? LOL. @translationwiz Soviets transferring funds to the US? You've been chewing too much qat.

The big fight now is between the Russian post-Marxists and the Muslim Brotherhood. If the Russians wanted to keep their old friend Qaddafi in power, the Libyan rebellion would have been crushed already. But I think Qaddafi has become too chummy with the Western powers (which means he's stopped blowing up airliners recently), so the Russian are mad at him and want to drop their client for another.

Libya bought Billions of USD, of weapons from the Soviets. And now they are rusting in the garages. The same day, they put the money in the accounts, the Soviets transferred it to US accts.
