"Building Bombs on the Plains." In 1942, the US Navy built a 45 million dollar ammo depot in Hastings, Nebraska to make 40% of all ammunition used in the Pacific. The 2000 African-American sailors, commanded by African-American "acting" officers, faced "deep south" style discrimination. Official Navy history omits much of the story of the Hastings depot, but Yeoman and "acting" Lieutenant Willie Tripp tells us about "The Negro Ordinance Battalion". For more information about the Battalion visit Nebraskastudies.org.

  • William Tripp is my grandfather and melody is my mom so that's pretty cool that they were on this. Also William passed three days ago but it's an honor to be his grandson

  • my grandmother worked there I was born and raised in Hastings...I have been out there several times it's fascinating. Thank you for sharing

  • We found your video interesting as our father was in Hastings NE prior to his enlistment into WWII he served in the army 10th Mountain Division when I married into the family we shared stories of the ammunition depots located in Hastings, I new of them because I was born in Hastings, NE in 1970 and my Grandfather was enlisted in the Navy, however, he has since passed and never talked of WWII or his enlistment with us of his service days. Thank You for your story.
